CHARLTON – Dorothy T. (Taft) Barre, 105, of Masonic Home Road, died Thursday, May 16, 2024, at the Overlook Masonic Health Center in Charlton.  She was predeceased by her husband of 38 years, Clarence J. Barre who died in 1999.  She is survived by her son, Nelson Dunham of Yardley, PA; her granddaughter, Shara Dunham; her nephews and nieces, Stephen D. Fyfe, Stewart A. Fyfe, Susan Fyfe Graton and her husband John Graton, Scott G. Fyfe, Jane Sparta and her husband Joseph, Michael Barre and his wife Michelle, and Arlene Stayner and her husband Ralph; and many great nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sister, Marjorie T. Fyfe.  She was born in Worcester, daughter of the late Walter and Fronie (Adams) Taft, and lived in Oxford for most of her life before moving to Webster in 1995 and Charlton in 2008.  She graduated from Oxford High School in 1936, and Massachusetts Memorial Hospital in Boston in 1942.

Mrs. Barre was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.  She was a member of the Worcester County Chapter and the National Chapter of the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge.  She was a life member of the American Legion Post 58 in Oxford.

Mrs. Barre was a registered nurse at Hahnemann Hospital in Worcester for 28 years prior to retirement.  She also worked at Veteran’s Hospital in Newington, CT, and Cushing Hospital.  She was a member as well as historian of the First Congregational Church in Oxford.  She served on various committees and held numerous positions at the church, and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years.  She was a member of the Friends of the Oxford Public Library and the Huguenot Memorial Society in Oxford.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the First Congregational Church, 355 Main St., Oxford.  Burial will be private at North Cemetery in Oxford.  There are no calling hours.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Congregational Church, P.O. Box 585, Oxford, MA 01540.
