Everett Carey

OXFORD - Everett H. "Sam" Carey, 92, of Oxford, died on Tuesday, December 30, 2014, in his home surrounded by his loving family. He leaves his wife of 62 years, Phyllis (Hafstrom) Carey; his children, Donna LaPlante and her husband Jeff of Auburn, Greg Carey and his wife Laura Lee of Dudley, Rev. Scott Carey of Jacksonville, Arkansas, and Lisa Bellofatto of Oxford. He also leaves eight grandchildren, ten great grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by his son Mark; his parents Carl and Dora (Allen) Carey; his sisters Ethel Johnson and Alberta Bedard; and his brother Russell Carey. Sam was a lifelong resident of Oxford. He was an active member of the Oxford United Methodist Church, a 32nd Degree Mason, and Past Master of the Oxford Lodge of Masons. In addition, he was an Alleppo Shriner, Past Master of the Order of the Eastern Star, member of the V.F.W., and the Oxford Ecumenical Food Council. Sam served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and saw service in both the Asiatic and Pacific Theaters. He worked for the Massachusetts Electric Company for 36 years before retiring in 1986. Sam was an avid sports fan and followed the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and Boston Celtics. He enjoyed golfing, playing pitch and cribbage, and walking. He was happiest when surrounded by family members, and was a gentle tease. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 3, 2015, at the Oxford United Methodist Church, 465 Main St., Oxford. Military burial will follow at North Cemetery in Oxford. Calling hours are Friday, January 2, 2015, from 5-8 p.m. at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oxford Ecumenical Food Shelf, 4 Maple Rd., Oxford, MA 01540.
