Worcester- John R. Garvey, 83, of Mary Scano Drive, died Sunday, May 9, 2010, at the Christopher House, after an illness. His wife of 37 years, Thelma (Eyesaman) Garvey, of Westfield , died in 1985. He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth A. Singer and her husband David of Charlton; his sister Betty Morris of Ilion, New York; two granddaughters Aviya and Eliana Singer, both of Charlton; and many nephews and nieces. John was born in Herkimer, New York, and lived there for 25 years, Westfield, MA for many years, Grafton for 8 years, before moving to Worcester 5 years ago. Mr. Garvey worked as a bookkeeper for Lane Construction, in Westfield, MA for 30 years. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII serving as a radarman, third class. John was a member of the American Legion of Westfield, MA. He enjoyed crossword puzzles, sitting in the sun, and playing checkers with his granddaughters. A military memorial service will be held at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, at Paradis Funeral Home, 357 Main Street, Oxford. A memorial calling hour will be held on Wednesday, May 12, 2010, 4:00 p.m. until time of service. Contributions may be made in his memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
