OXFORD – Karen L. Cowperthwaite, 73, of Aspen Drive, died Thursday, February 8, 2024, in her home. She is survived by four children, Nicole M. Bradley of Southbridge, Lisa D. Ulery of Ellington, CT, Dennis J. Bourbeau of Cleveland, OH, and Edward A. Bourbeau of Haddonfield, NJ; her sister, Robin Bushey of South Windsor, CT; four grandchildren, Noelle Bourbeau, Matthew Ulery, Remy Bourbeau, and Gabrielle Bourbeau; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was predeceased by her husband, Andre J. Bourbeau; her brother, Gary Cowperthwaite; and her sister, Sheila Wright. She was born in Hartford, CT, daughter of the late Alfred and Mary Louise (St. Cyr) Cowperthwaite, and lived in Oxford since 1978. She graduated from East Catholic High School in Manchester, CT, in 1968, and received an associate degree from Manchester Community College.
Mrs. Cowperthwaite was a nurse at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester for 10 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of St. Roch’s Church in Oxford, where she also volunteered for the church and taught C.C.D. at both St. Roch’s and St. Ann’s Churches. She was a Cub Scout den mother and Brownie leader when her children were young, a member of 4-H, and a member of the Access Oxford Cable TV Committee.
She raised money for the high school band and raised money to help low-income families repair their homes. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling, and listening to music. Her children and her grandchildren were most important in her life.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, February 16, 2024, at St. Roch’s Church, 332 Main St., Oxford. Those attending are respectfully requested to meet directly at the church. Burial will follow at St. Roch’s Cemetery in Oxford. Calling hours are Monday, February 12, 2024, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
