Michael R. Bishop

OXFORD - Michael R. Bishop, 70, of Conlin Road, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 27, 2026, in his home surrounded by his family.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Kathleen A. (Guerin) Bishop; his son, Michael W. Bishop of Webster; his granddaughter, Morgan Leigh Bishop of Oxford; a brother, John P. Bishop and his wife Lisa of Millbury; his “adopted” daughter, Gail Giles and her late husband Mark; many extended family members throughout Leicester, Westborough, and Vermont; and his best friend and sidekick, Archie. He is predeceased by his brother, William V. Bishop; his sister, Claire M. Zamaites; and his mother-in-law, Sonia K. Guerin, who was a second mother to Michael, and always made sure he had a meal.

Mr. Bishop was born in Worcester, son of the late William V. and Rita M. (Roy) Bishop, and lived in Westborough and Millbury before moving to Oxford. He graduated from Millbury High School in 1974. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, proudly serving in Vietnam.

Michael worked at Wyman-Gordon in Worcester for 44 years, retiring in 2016. He was the Senior Vice Commander of the VFW Post 5663 and was a member at the American Legion Post 58, both in Oxford. He and Mark Giles had great plans to restore and update the VFW.

Michael, or “Pigpen” as many knew him by, had a wonderful sense of humor and always knew when to make a joke. He was a very kind man who would do anything to lend a helping hand. He loved attending flea markets and setting up his own booth at the Brimfield Fair. He enjoyed fishing and spending time with his dog, Archie. Most of all, Michael loved spending time with Kathleen and Morgan.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, October 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Roch’s Cemetery, 25 Federal Hill Rd., Oxford. A celebration of life will be held at the VFW, 20 Federal Hill Rd., Oxford, following the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Veterans for ALS Research, 480 Arsenal St., Suite 201, Watertown, MA 02472.
