Philip Davis, Sr.

OXFORD – Philip Irving Davis Sr., 77, of Forest Street, died peacefully on Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at Fitchburg Healthcare, after a long illness.  He was well known as Papa, Uncle Phil, Mr. D., Turkey, and Coach, by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gail M. (Wagner) Davis of Oxford; two children, Philip I. Davis Jr. and his wife Kirstin of Oxford, and Tara Lynn Davis and her fiancé Derek Dumas of Salem; his sister, Beverly Chauvin of North Grosvenordale, CT; his brother, Gerald Davis Sr. and his wife Priscilla of North Grosvenordale, CT; two grandsons, Chase Davis and Hunter Davis, both of Oxford; and many nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by two children, Helena F. Davis and Grant P. Davis; and ten brothers and sisters, Irving Davis, Iona Gauthier, Frederick Davis Sr, Eunice Ratcliffe, Pauline Davis, Joyce Rolfe Thibeault, Alfred Davis Sr, Charles Davis, Russell Davis Sr, and Arthur Davis Sr.

He was born in Oxford, son of the late Van J. and Florence (Cove) Davis, and was a lifelong resident of Oxford.  He graduated from Oxford High School in 1965, and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

Mr. Davis was a courier at Metrostat in Yarmouth for 20 years, retiring in 2007.  Previously, he worked for UPS for 14 years.  He was a member of the V.F.W. Post 5663 and the American Legion Post 58, both in Oxford.  He coached Little League in Oxford for many years and T-Ball on Saturday mornings for 18 years.  His greatest joy was attending all of his grandson’s sporting events, and many of his nephews’ and nieces’ events as well.  He enjoyed his Saturday night card games, and was above all a dedicated family man.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 3, 2023, at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford.  Burial with military honors will follow at North Cemetery in Oxford.  Calling hours are Monday, January 2, 2023, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the W.Roxbury VA Hospital (checks/mailing address to: Fisher House Boston, P.O. Box 230, South Walpole, MA 02071).
