OXFORD – Raymond G. Hurley, Jr., 71, of Oxford, died peacefully on Monday, January 31, 2022, at UMass Medical Center, Worcester, with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Jo-Ann M. (Moossa) Hurley of Oxford; three children, Jennifer M. Tuxbury and her husband, Scott, of Franklin, Sean P. Hurley and his wife, Lee, of Maplewood, NJ, and Shannon E. Barca and her husband, Joe, of Franklin; two brothers, Paul Hurley and his wife, Jeanine, of Oxford, and Jim Hurley and his wife, Judy, of Oxford; four sisters, Mary Ellen McClune and her husband, Jim, of Holden, Joanne Leeming and her husband, Rupert, of Hopkinton, NH, Peggy Gaffney and her husband, Brian, of Rutland, and Kate White and her husband, Bill, of Holden; six grandchildren, Chloe, Sienna, Declan, Maddie, Paige, and Jack; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends.
He was born in Worcester, son of the late Raymond G. and Helen M. (Cahill) Hurley, and lived in Worcester before moving to Oxford in 1976. He graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Worcester in 1968, and received his Bachelor’s, Master’s and C.A.G.S. from Worcester State University. Ray was an Eagle Scout and a proud U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Ray worked at the Nazareth Home for Boys and was a school psychologist at the public school systems in Milford, Putnam, Mansfield, and Millbury for many years, retiring in 2011. During retirement, he worked part-time as a school psychologist at the Nativity School in Worcester where he positively impacted the lives of many students. He was a member of the Massachusetts Teachers’ Association and the Marine Corps League. Ray loved spending time with his family, especially during their regular summer vacations. He loved listening to and playing music on his guitar. He enjoyed the outdoors - everything from working in the yard to hiking the White Mountains. Ray was an avid reader, story teller, and Patriots fan. His life’s mission was helping underserved and underprivileged children. He worked in various school districts strongly advocating for the needs of all students as he personally and professionally assisted them in becoming contributing members of their community. He invested so much time, care, and resources into helping others become the best versions of themselves. Ray was most proud of his children and grandchildren and often shared his pride with others.
Calling hours are Saturday, February 5, 2022, from 2:00 - 4:00 pm at Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford. Family and friends remembrance service and military honors will be held at 4:00 pm on Saturday at the conclusion of calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nativity School in Worcester, MA 67 Lincoln Street, Worcester, MA.
