Oxford

OXFORD - Steven Wandrei passed away at home on Saturday, December 4, 2021.  A lifelong resident of Oxford, Steve was the son of the late Alfred and Ruth (Dimock) Wandrei.

Steve is survived by his loving family; sister Joan Gong and her husband Harry of Chelmsford; brother David Wandrei and his wife Phyllis of Sterling; niece Emily Dean, her husband David and their son Callum of Woburn; and nephew Brian Wandrei and his fiancee Heather of New Ipswich, NH.  Steve also leaves dear friends Ricardo Colon and his wife Cynthia of Reading, MA.

Steve will be most fondly remembered as the Captain of the Hurling Chunks World Championship Punkin’ Chunkin’ team.  As Captain, Steve led his team into competition for many years in the trebuchet category in regional and national pumpkin hurling competitions.  Regularly finishing not quite last, the team embraced the philosophy of being “not the best, but good enough.”  Frigid camping trips and cowboy coffee will never be the same without the Captain.

Steve was an enthusiastic lover of polka music, a gardener, and a beekeeper for French River Apiaries.  He retired in 2021 from the Raytheon Corporation following a career of more than forty years as an engineer.

In addition to his parents, Steve was predeceased by his brother James.

In lieu of a funeral there will be a celebration of Steve’s life in the spring.

His family wishes to thank Dr Winokur’s team at the UMass Memorial Cancer Center and Care Central VNA and Hospice for their dedication and expertise over the past year.

Paradis-Givner Funeral Home in Oxford is directing the arrangements.
