Obituary

BOISE, ID - Gladys Robertson Werner of Boise, ID, passed away peacefully on Martin Luther King Day, January 18, 2021. She was 96.

The daughter of Leroy and Marion Leavitt Robertson, she was born in Springfield, MA, and grew up in New Britain, CT. After graduating from New Britain High School, she attended Bryant College for secretarial studies. In 1946 she married David L. Werner, and in 1954 the family settled in Portland, CT.

A devoted mother, Gladys enjoyed cooking, gardening, knitting, and teaching her 4H girls. She had a lifelong love of swimming and participated with her friends in water ballet.

Gladys worked for several years as an executive secretary for the educational publisher of “My Weekly Reader,” and one of her projects was typing a biography of Martin Luther King Jr. In retirement she began a second career as a Christian Science Nurse.

In 2000 she relocated to Old Saybrook, CT, where she took pleasure in learning to play piano, visiting at the beach, and swimming along the shore. Later she moved into Heritage Commons in Middletown, CT, and Brookdale Parkcenter Assisted Living in Boise, ID. She was a kind and cheerful resident much loved by the staff at these facilities, and the family is grateful for their attention and care.

She is survived by her son Paul (Christine) Werner of Boise, ID; her daughter, Ruth (James) Hubert of Gilford, NH; and her granddaughters, Emily (Eric) Hahn and Jennifer Hubert.  She was predeceased by her parents, her former husband David Werner, her son Carl Werner, her daughter-in-law Harriett Jones Werner, and her infant son Robert Werner.

Gladys was buried with her parents in the family plot in Oxford, MA, on January 22, 2021. Cloverdale and Paradis-Givner Funeral Homes made the arrangements. A graveside remembrance will be held when the family can safely gather.
