CHARLTON – Joan B. (Phelan) Ryan, 81, of Old Worcester Road, died Sunday, March 6, 2022, at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester.  Daughter of the late Richard J. and Beulah A. (Demers) Phelan, she was born and lived in Worcester until moving to Charlton in 1969.  She graduated from Commerce High School in Worcester in 1958.

Mrs. Ryan had a long career in the insurance industry, working at New England Life for many years, as well as at Paul Revere and Provident before finally retiring from Unum Insurance in 1999.  She was an active volunteer in her community and children’s endeavors including many years as a CCD teacher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Charlton and treasurer of the Shepherd Hill Booster Club.  A founding member of the Shepherd Hill Music Parents’ Association, she was also a parishioner at St. Roch’s Church in Oxford. She enjoyed reading, bird watching and traveling and was an avid New England sports fan, especially of her beloved Red Sox. Above all, she loved her family and was especially proud that each of her of children chose careers of public service.

She was predeceased by her husband of 39 years, Richard F. Ryan of Charlton who died in 1999; and a son, Richard J. Ryan who died in 1974.  She is survived by her four children, Colonel (U.S. Army, Retired) Diane M. Ryan and her husband Alphonse Roscoe of Bedford, Donna J. Ryan of Charlton, David M. Ryan and his wife Penny of Charlton, and Maureen A. Ryan and her significant other Christopher Martin of Spencer; her sister-in-law, A. Claire Provencal of Webster; six grandchildren, Thomas Ryan, Caroline Roscoe, Katie Ryan, Olivia Roscoe, Zachari Corbett, and Christopher Corbett; numerous nephews and nieces; and many friends at Accord Adult Day Center in Webster.

A funeral will be held on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from Paradis-Givner Funeral Home, 357 Main St., Oxford, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Roch’s Church, 332 Main St., Oxford.  Burial will follow at West Ridge Cemetery in Charlton.  Calling hours are Friday, March 11, 2022, from 5-7 p.m. at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Support Network of South Central Massachusetts, Inc., c/o Tri-Valley, 10 Mill St., Dudley, MA 01571.
