Paul Guertin, Sr.

CHARLTON - Paul P. Guertin, 85, of Charlton, MA, (recently of Holden, MA), passed peacefully into heaven on Sunday, August 14, 2022.  Born in Oxford, MA on May 4, 1937, the eleventh child of eleven children to Joseph V. and Clara (Laramie) Guertin, he grew up in the town he loved, and graduated with the Oxford Class of 1955. He served in the Massachusetts National Guard from 1959-1960.

Mr. Guertin worked as a composer at the Worcester Telegram & Gazette for 34 years until his retirement in 2000.  Mr. Guertin’s love and deep dedication to Oxford found his calling by serving on many committees and volunteering with Emergency Medical Services. He was a part-time special police officer for the Oxford Police Department, and instrumental in starting the police cadette program, a part-time EMT, and EMT instructor. He enjoyed teaching providing care to those in need. For many years he was involved with the Oxford Boy Scout Troop 120, and he was a mentor and leader for many.

Paul was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers: Edward “Sonny” Guertin of Shrewsbury, MA; Lawrence “Toots” Guertin of Chula Vista, CA; George “Buddy” Guertin of Worcester; and Joseph “Ray” Guertin of St. Pete Beach, FL. Paul was predeceased by one sister: Claire “Cookie” (Guertin) Pelletier of Worcester, MA.

Aside from being survived by his wife of 17 years, Virginia (Madaga) Germain, Paul leaves behind his three children: two sons P. Phil and his wife Nancy (Fields) of Knoxville, TN; and Doug and his wife Mary (Misiaszek) of Monson, MA; and a daughter Heidi (Guertin) Correira of Holden, MA, who he made his home with, 6 step children; Ronald W. Jr., Steven K., Michael J., James F., Kenneth M., and Randy; six grandchildren he dearly loved and their spouses: Stephanie and her husband Jon, Stephen and his wife Anna, Nicholas, Joshua, Benjamin, and Jacob.

Paul is survived by 5 of siblings: Mary “Biddy” (Guertin) Stefanov of Avon CT; Clifton “Franny” Guertin of Williamsburg, VA; Ruth Gibbons (Guertin) of Hudson, NY; Loraine (Guertin) Favreault of Worcester, MA; Walter Guertin and his wife Joanne of West Brookfield, MA; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.

He attended St Roch’s Church his entire life and was devout in his faith, he was a third-degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Anyone who knew Paul knew family and faith were the most important elements in his life.

He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and by the many lives he touched.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at St. Roch’s Cemetery in Oxford.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to be made to the charity of your choice in Paul’s name.  Paradis-Givner Funeral Home in Oxford is directing the arrangements.
