Vern Longueil

July 31, 1949 — May 24, 2021

Auburn

AUBURN – Vern E. Longueil, 71, of West Street, died Monday, May 24, 2021, at home with his family by his side after a brave battle with cancer.  He is survived by three children, Michelle E. Hall of Auburn, Melanie E. Porcher and her husband Elumah of Auburn, and Brett E. Longueil and his wife Julie Odgren of Oxford; two brothers, Kirk Longueil of Marlborough and Richard Longueil of Sandwich; four grandchildren, Jonas Warner, Julia Hall, Jaylen Porcher, Bentley Longueil,  a step-daughter Brittany Pickeral, two woman he loved very much Gail Longueil and Sharon Pickeral and son in law David Hall.  He was predeceased by three brothers, Carl Longueil, Jeffrey Longueil, Dale Longueil; and his stepmother, Jeannine Longueil.  He was born in Springfield, son of the late Richard Longueil and Mary (Seibert) Stoliker, and lived most of his life in Auburn.  He graduated from Auburn High School in 1969 and attended Salem State College.

Vern was a truck driver and heavy equipment operator in the construction industry throughout his life.  He owned and operated Longueil Construction in Oxford for several years.  Previously, he operated a tree service company with his brother Carl.

In his early years, Vern and his brothers were as thick as thieves and could usually be found playing pond hockey in the winter or jumping off the unsanctioned rope swing at Camp Gleason.

Vern was a member of the 1968 hockey team that won the state championship at the Boston Garden where he scored unassisted.  He and his team were inducted into the hall of fame.  It was no secret that he was an extraordinary hockey player and may still hold the record for most defensive goals, a lot of them from the blue line.  But many people didn’t know he was an even better swimmer and diver.  You never heard any of this from him because he was incredibly humble.

Vern was a true gentleman.  He removed his hat when he entered any building even if it was just to grab his oatmeal cookies at Walmart.  He stood to greet a person.  He taught his children to treat everyone the same no matter who they were.  He enjoyed sports, fishing, gardening, snorkeling, bird watching, an occasional car race and working in the yard.  He also found great joy in taking his “fifth grandchild” and best friend Coco for weekends and walks.

Most importantly he loved his children and family so much.  He was so proud to be a grandfather.  He always wanted the best for those he loved and would be there whether it was to give advice or lend his skills.  He was generous to the point he would go without if it meant someone else could use it more.  He would want us all to live the rest of our lives happy, to the fullest and without regret.

He will be missed more than words can describe.
